What’s the Best Mattress for My Back?

Well, Goldilocks, mileage may vary.  A mattress is a very personal thing and everybody has their idea about what the perfect one feels like.

Too hard.

Too soft.

Just right.

Answering the question “What’s the best mattress for my back?”, is about finding the “just right” sweet spot.

Your mattress is a major component in the formula that makes for a good night’s sleep.  For some, that formula includes a hot bath and a glass of warm milk.  For others, reading is the secret ingredient.  But no matter who you are, a good rest depends primarily on your body’s comfort.

Let’s get to work on finding your “just right” sweet spot.

Lower Back Pain

If you’re dealing with lower back pain, you need a mattress that’s specially adapted to provide you with the support you need to get a good night’s rest.  You should seek out a firmer mattress to provide that support.  I’m not suggesting you sleep on a board.  I’m saying that on a scale of 1-10, your mattress should be just above middling, skewed toward firmness.

If you’re waking up with increased pain, needing to be horizontal for awhile before you feel more like yourself, then the bed you’re sleeping on is probably not the right one.  It’s probably too soft, in fact, because soft mattresses don’t provide you with enough support for your lower back problem.

Test drive it.

It doesn’t matter if you have a sleep number bed, a pillow top, or another type of high end mattress.  If you’re feeling pressure when you lie down, in one or more parts of your body, then your mattress isn’t serving you.

What you’re looking for is the “cloud” effect.  You should be comfortable, but not sinking into the mattress.  The only way to really know if the mattresses you’re looking at are going to work for you is to test drive them.

Those people you see in the furniture store, lying on mattress displays?  They’re not oddballs.  They’re 100% right.  To know that the mattress you’re looking at is right for you, you need to lie on it for about 10 minutes to see whether you’re getting that “cloud” effect.

For those of material girth…

If you’re a person of substance, a spring mattress is probably your best bet.  This type of mattress has been around the longest and has become more sophisticated with time.  Mostly, though, heavier people get the right kind of support while they sleep, with springs.

Don’t be fooled by claims that more springs mean better quality.  A mattress containing 380 springs will do the trick.  By the same token, avoid lower end versions.  You deserve better.

Goldilocks had it right.

Where mattresses around concerned, Goldilocks was bang on.  The right mattress is a personal matter that requires a small investment of time to find the right one for you.
